World Ark is the magazine of Heifer International, a global nonprofit that seeks to end hunger and poverty through gifts of livestock and environmentally sound agricultural training.

The magazine brings the struggle and heart of development work home with stunning photography and compelling stories about the people Heifer works with. It reaches beyond Heifers work to include infographics, interviews, book reviews, documentary reviews, videos and originally reported features on development topics such as urbanization, health, agroecology and permaculture, peace and community building.

World Ark also highlights innovations in development work as theyre happening at Heifer International as well as cutting-edge research and solutions of note from peer nongovernmental organizations, partners, governments and grass-roots groups and entrepreneurial individuals around the world.

The magazine has regular interviews with innovators and leaders on topics such as small farming, the local foods movement, womens empowerment, conservation of finite resources and improving the environment of our shared planet. In the print issue, which Heifer has been producing as World Ark and Sharing Life since 1974, subjects have included Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, Rajiv Shah, social musician Dan Zanes, Millard Fuller, Danielle Nierenberg of the Worldwatch Institute, Erin Ganju of Room to Read, Ellen Gustafson of 30 Project, authors Patrick Rothfuss, Joel Salatin, Marion Nestle and Dan Pallotta. Contributors include Barbara Kingsolver, Lester Brown and author and poverty economist Stephen Smith of George Washington University.

The story-telling function of World Ark is key to explaining Heifer Internationals values-based development model that encourages self-sufficiency and celebrates the vital role of women as catalysts for change and peace, as experienced and dedicated smallholder farmers and small-business entrepreneurs and as family and community builders.

World Arks alternative-gift catalog gives donors the honor of providing two gifts at once. The first, to honor or celebrate a loved one who appreciates the spirit of making the world a better place, and again to the recipient, who receives livestock and training to improve nutrition, income and health for their families and communities.
